Reading is measured according to the Colour Wheel.

Your children will have coloured stickers relating to the colourwheel on the back of the books they bring home each night.

Children who are brand new to school will start at Magenta and progress all the way around to Gold.  At the end of Year 1, these children are expected to be reading at Green.  At the end of Year 2, these children are expected to be reading at Turquoise (light blue).

Your children will need your help from home in terms of reading with them each night.  Our brand new children may need their book read to them again and that is ok.

Please sign their reading log and return these to school (via their book bags).  I will make a comment at the end of each week depending on the progress your children have made over the week.

Most of the children are doing well in terms of reading from home. I have checked some reading logs to find there are no parent involvement in the reading.  Please help your children to develop a love for reading at this age.  If they see you loving reading, it will rub off on them I'm sure.  Make reading fun, read in a different voice, be expressive when reading, take turns or involve the whole family.  Reading does not have to take half an hour.  I think five to ten minutes each night is a great start.

After reading, have a conversation about the book.  In doing this, you will gain an understanding of how much your child understands the book that has been read.

There will be no books coming home over the weekend.  Your children can read books around home.

Enjoy reading and have fun!
